Gabriela Sining Lila: Bread and Roses

Song Adapted by Sining Lila-Gabriela

Photo taken during the March 8, 2011 Women’s March led by GABRIELA-Philippines

As we go marching, marching
In the beauty of the day
A million darkened kitchens
A thousand mill loft’s grey
Our touch will hold the radiance
As the sullen sun discloses
And the people here
They’re singing
Bread and roses, bread and roses

As we go marching, marching
We battle too for men
For they are women’s children
And we mother them again
Our hearts should not be threatened
From birth until life closes
Hearts starve as well as bodies
Give us bread but give us roses

As we go marching, marching
A number of women dead
Go crying through our singing
Their ancient call for bread
Small art, love and beauty
Their drudging spirits knew
Yes it is bread we fight for
But we fight for roses too

As we go marching, marching
We bring them greater days
The rising of women
Means the rising of the race
No more the drudge and idler
Tend the toil where one reposes
But the sharing of life’s glory
Give us bread but give us roses

Habang tayo ay sumusulong
Sa liwanag ng araw
Tangan natin ang diwa
Ng malayang kababaihan
Walang makakapigil
Sa lakas ng ating tinig
Salubungin ang umaga
Ng tunay na kalayaan
