A night of opera and contemporary songs with Irma Ponce Enrile Potenciano, soprano; Ronan Ferrer, tenor and Eugene delos Santos, tenor. Accompanied by pianist Najib Ismail, the concert was staged by UST Conservatory of Music Voice Department at Philamlife Auditorium in UN Avenue Manila, February 28, 2013.
At more than 80 of age, maestra Potenciano is still at it and showcased her unfettered total performance since her musical debut at age 15. She rendered Prelude (Cycle of Life, Landon Ronald), Allerseelen (Richard Strauss), Psyche (Emile Paladilhe), When I have Sung my Songs to You (Ernest Charles), Porgi Amor (Le Nozze di Figaro, Wolfgang Mozart), Something Wonderful (The King and I, Rodgers and Hammerstein II) and Parang Maghapon Lamang (Julian Celis Balita).
Ferrer serenaded the audience with his vast repertoire of Zueignung, op. 10 no. 1 (Strauss), Verborgenheit (Hugo Wolf), Vittoria mio Core (Giacomo Carissimi), Ah Leve toi Soleil (Romeo et Juliette, Charles Gounod), I only Want to Say (Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar, Andrew Lloyd Webber) and Iyo Kailan Pa Man (Angel Pena).
Delos Santos shared his captivating renditions of Vaga Luna (Vincenzo Bellini), Tanta Bella (Ottorino Respighi), L’ultima Canzone (Francisco Paolo Tosti), Svegliatevi nel Core (Giulio Cesare, George Frideric Handel), Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (Les Misrablés, Claude Michel Schoenberg) and Kundiman ’86 (Ernani Cuenco).
The trio opened with Widmung op. 25 no. 1 (Robert Schumann) and closed with Gaano ko Ikaw Kamahal (Cuenco).
I must confess my patience is not normally good at sitting for more than an hour while constantly struggling with the tranquility that classical music brings which is also a sleep temptation. On the other hand, I remain awake with the gush of emotions that filled me with the artists’ powerful voice and majestic composition of Philippine and world geniuses. The same feeling I had when Philippine Opera Company stunned me with Bagong Harana though it is in one aspect a different experience of totally Filipino musical revue from folk songs, indigenous chants, kundiman, nationalist ballads and OPM hits among others.#
